I attended the BEPA conference at the Wynfrey Hotel earlier this month, and I am so excited to know that this group exists. I currently work at the Freshwater Land Trust in a contract position that is ending in August 2017. I am looking for environmental job opportunities in the Birmingham/Jefferson County area, and I thought it would be a good idea to contact you in my job search.

I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Development with which I previously worked as a therapist and teacher, however, after working in the education/healthcare fields for a few years, I returned to Auburn University to study Ecology/Wildlife/Natural Resource Management. I graduated in 2016 with a Masters of Science in Natural Resource Management, which led me to my current position at the Freshwater Land Trust in Birmingham.

As a graduate student in the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences at Auburn, I gained experience with GIS, population grids, and data collection. I acquired skills associated with specimen preparation and data-basing in the Auburn University Natural History Museum Freeman Herbarium, as well as aviary maintenance and rehabilitation of raptor species with the Auburn University Southeastern Raptor Center. My master’s project focused on the economic impacts and conservation value associated with endangered species. Additionally, I participated in two study abroad programs: one through Auburn in Panama focusing on GIS, and a month-long program through the University of Georgia Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources in Costa Rica focusing on GIS, conservation economics, and sustainable agriculture.

These diverse education opportunities and real-world work experiences have allowed me to learn to effectively analyze, develop, and manage programs. Additionally, these positions have provided professional experience with different industries, governments, stakeholders, age groups, and cultures both domestically and abroad.

The Environmental, Health and Safety Specialist (EHS) will provide EHS support to employees and management at the assigned branch and field operations, promote a positive safety culture to operations and employees, implement and manage corporate health & safety programs, and promote continuous safety awareness and improvement.


  • Provide safety support in promoting safety awareness and safe work practices in an effort to achieve a safety culture with zero incidents and maintain regulatory compliance
  • Understands and is knowledgeable in applicable EPA, OSHA, MSHA, and DOT regulations
  • Assists in development and implementation of EHS procedures, policies, and guidelines
  • Conducts inspections and audits, as required to ensure compliance with Company Policies and regulatory compliance
  • Assists in mitigation of identified hazardous conditions and/or unsafe acts with employee’s and management
  • Participates in incident investigations and assists with development of corrective actions, and completion of reports as required
  • Assists in case management of Workers’ Compensation Claims
  • Manages incident statistics for assigned Branch’s
  • Assist with development and review of site work plans and safety plans as requested
  • Ability to represent Company during regulatory inspections, audits, and meetings
  • Preparation of reports as requested by Management
  • Conducts training as requested by Management
  • Manages employee EHS training programs
  • Attends operations meetings to review concerns and issues as requested
  • Responds in timely fashion to emergency response, and other incidents. Provides EHS support at these incidents
  • Manages air monitoring and exposure assessment programs for employees as identified
  • Participates in Health & Safety Committee Meetings

  • High School education or equivalent required
  • Bachelor’s degree in the field of Occupational Safety & Health preferred
  • 3-5 years’ health and safety experience
  • Comprehensive understanding of EPA, OSHA, DOT, and MSHA regulations
  • Strong organizational and communication skills required
  • Successful experience in training HAZWOPER & OSHA 501/511 certification preferred
  • Ability to travel at least 50% of the time
  • Experience using Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint required
  • Sometimes requires sitting, standing, walking, puling and/or pushing, stooping, crouching, and climbing
  • Ability to lift > 25 pounds,
  • Ability to obtain Medical & Respirator Clearance
